Course Description

For Ages 7-10

Understand the world and its interconnected systems through the lens of the Earth and Life Sciences. At the same time, build up foundational knowledge of computer science concepts as you apply them through thematic projects on Scratch.

KEEPIN’ IT SHORT & SNAPPY

  • Suitable for kids who have completed Scratch Explorers 1
  • Integrate science with code and discover the real world applications of STEM in the world
  • Build coding projects in Scratch to visualise to explore your understanding of Science topics

All you need to know

Expect the unexpected when science and code collide! Get excited about the world of science and learn the basics of coding to process and apply new knowledge about the Earth and Life Sciences.

In this module, we’ll learn all about life on Earth. From Life Sciences to Earth Sciences, our learning will culminate in the creation of a thematic interactive animation or quiz made with block-based programming platform Scratch.

What are the elements that make up the world we live in?

From the air we breathe to the food and water we consume, take a closer look into the unique qualities of what gives us live.

Explore the nature of matter, and how an object’s particles determine its physical state. Next, learn and apply basic programming concepts to code up an animation explaining the movement of particles as matter changes state.

Take it further by exploring the different materials that make up our everyday items. Have you ever wondered why we might wear cotton on our bodies, or use plastic containers? As we learn about various materials & their properties, get hands-on and code up your own Scratch game using conditionals and if-then blocks!

Re-discover how energy conversions take place in our daily lives.

Where does sound come from? How are shadows formed?

Learn about sound and light energy as you use code to create your own digital sundial!

What’s the difference between heat and temperature? How does electricity power our homes?

Learn about heat energy and explore how electrical circuits work: bring your imagination to life by coding up a Scratch project using variables and sensing blocks, and create your own digital electrical circuits!

In Scratch Explorers, kids ages 7-10 synergise introductory concepts in science and coding. In each class, kids process new knowledge by building mini projects via block-based language Scratch, culminating in a final project at the end of term that creatively expresses what they’ve learned.

In the process, kids develop creativity, curiosity, and a growth mindset, and in subsequent modules learn to use planning and design thinking to prototype solutions to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The learning outcomes for Scratch Explorers are aligned to Singapore’s MOE Science Syllabus.

Oh! The stuff you'll learn

  • Learn about algorithms and programming core concepts such as variables, loops, conditionals, events
  • Develop programme development skills such as debugging and iteration
  • Explore and learn about topics in Earth and Life sciences
  • Gather information about a problem by asking questions and doing research; Demonstrate how a problem affects others and brainstorm ideas using various methods

Life skills you'll learn

Design Thinking
Logical Thinking
Presentation Skills
Problem Solving

Pedagogy

No lectures. No memorisation. No ONE right answer. Like real life, we're all about trying things out yourself, failing, figuring what went wrong & trying again. These are the skills & mindset that will last a lifetime and how we learn in real life. Let's get kids to learn how to learn. Because the kids who learn to learn become curious, inventive, resourceful human beings who solve real world problems to make a meaningful impact.
