From a curious peek into classic games beloved by people all over the world, explore the nature of gameplay with code as our medium, as we recreate some of the most popular games over the years with Scratch!

  • Practise and hone your coding skills by applying concepts in various contexts
  • Exposure to the nature of gameplay and design
  • Recreate some of the games that have defined play, fun and childhood for generations!

All you need to know

In this follow up to Coding the Impossible 1, we gather inspiration from the games that have defined play, fun and childhood for generations.

First, we’ll take a closer look at game genres. From simulations to arcade games – think Flappy Bird and Fruit Ninja – we’ll consider how games have evolved over time, and explore the role of technology in shaping that.

Then, with code as our canvas, we’ll put into practise what we’ve learned about programming through block-based platform Scratch to recreate some of these games your parents and older siblings might be familiar with. As you hone your skills and apply them in various contexts, you’ll get a taste of the nuances and wonders of creating experiences for others with code.

As you take your creative coding superpowers further, you’ll learn to synergise the different perspectives of consumers and creators – expanding your worldview, understanding of how the world works, and the many applications of code along the way.

By the end of this module, you’ll be all ready to harness your superpowers in Scratch to integrate advancements in tech with the nature of games in the next module of Coding the Impossible.

Pedagogy

No lectures. No memorisation. No ONE right answer. Like real life, we're all about trying things out yourself, failing, figuring what went wrong & trying again. These are the skills & mindset that will last a lifetime and how we learn in real life. Let's get kids to learn how to learn. Because the kids who learn to learn become curious, inventive, resourceful human beings who solve real world problems to make a meaningful impact.
